Elodea canadensis is the premier specimen for plant cytology. Its submerged leaves are only two cell layers thick, eliminating the need for microtome sectioning or tissue staining. Under brightfield 400x optics, large lens-shaped chloroplasts and continuous cycloplasmic streaming (cyclosis) are immediately observable in real time.
