Water Photolysis & Photosystem II
2 H₂O + 4 photons → O₂ + 4 H⁺ + 4 e⁻

In the thylakoid membrane, photon energy (P680 reaction center) excites electrons within Photosystem II. The oxygen-evolving manganese-calcium complex oxidizes water molecules, liberating gaseous molecular oxygen (O₂) into the cytoplasm and pond water while pumping protons into the thylakoid lumen.

Experiment 01 // Blackman's Law of Limiting Factors
INVERTED TEST TUBE APPARATUS: O₂ BUBBLE STREAM
34 BUBBLES / MIN
LIGHT INTENSITY (PAR) 650 µmol/m²/s
CO₂ CONCENTRATION (NaHCO₃) 450 ppm
WATER TEMPERATURE 22.0 °C
LIGHT WAVELENGTH SPECTRUM

Blackman's Principle: When a biological process depends on several factors, its rate is limited by the factor in shortest supply. Notice how green light yields virtually zero bubbles because chlorophyll a/b reflects green wavelengths!

Flush against Cell Wall

In hypotonic solution, water enters via osmosis along the water potential gradient. The rigid cellulose cell wall exerts equal opposing wall pressure, preventing lysis and giving plant stems structural rigidity.
